The colors, values, atmosphere are right there and easy to understand.  One can take the most simplistic or detailed approach.  Every participant in the workshop will leave feeling inspired and with a beautiful work of art. This workshop is a four hour day, from 1pm – 5pm. The cost is $55 per day for members, $65 for non-members.
Workshop

“Nature Printing with a Press”
Explore the process of creating monotypes (one-of-a-kind) prints on paper. You will learn general printmaking techniques using an etching press.  Incorporating the elements and principles of design we will create prints using natural and man-made objects.  We will explore different ways of creating texture and depth on an inked surface using layering, overprinting, and collage. Using the plate you will create and pull: the original print, a “ghosted” print, and a third print utilizing what is left on the plate. The possibilities are endless.

Workshop
Judy & Lawrence Pumfrey - July 16 – 18

“Expressive Paintings –
How to Paint with Feeling”

Loosen up your painting!  Gain painting insights from this dynamic duo who will demonstrate their approach on how to observe and interpret subject matter. Workshop
David Curtis - July 20 – 22

“Impressions of Light” Landscape Oil Painting
The 3-day workshop will include lessons of the day directed toward capturing the impression of natural light. Day 1: Orientation, use of tones, which includes understanding of values, color and intensity of color. Day 2: Composition, taking up understanding the balance of objects found in nature as well as understanding balancing shapes, colors, line, and mass all applied to the creation of rhythm. Day 3: Understanding alla prima (all at once) and direct painting with the loaded brush.
Workshop
Shelly Eager - Aug 13 – 14

“Pushing Color” Pastel Workshop
Shelly Eager’s love of pastel comes from the luminosity and vividness of the colors. Shelly will teach you to push color and put down bold confident marks to help you turn an ordinary photo into an extraordinary painting. You will work in the studio from photos and she will work personally with you one on one at your easel . Shelly will encourage the students to remember the way the scene of your photo felt, the energy of the place and the weather you experienced. She will help you to get that down on paper, because expressing your memory is so much more exciting than merely reproducing your photo. Please bring photos you have taken of everyday life that evoke feelings in you. They can be city scenes, country fairs, restaurant scenes, parties… whatever brings up a memory that you want to get down on paper.
Workshop
Caleb Stone - Aug 19 – 21

“Capturing the Light of Outdoor Painting”

Caleb Stone will teach how to capture the feeling of light and atmosphere in your painting. He will teach how to get proper relationships of good values, color harmony, strong concepts and strong design. Each class will begin with a demonstration. Then Mr. Stone will help students with their paintings and end the day with a group critique to help show how to improve the painting.

Workshop
Ellen Rolli - Aug 24 – 26

“Big Color, Bold Strokes” Acrylic Workshop

Artist Ellen Rolli, featured in an American Artist Workshop Issue for her bold style and "loosening up" teaching techniques, will guide students to interpret subject matter with a brave, expressive and intuitive approach.  On the first day Ellen will discuss her process and demo, and students will work in the studio from simple still life subjects.  Second day we move outside to work from the surrounding landscape.  Third day students may work inside or out.  There will be a critique at the end of each session. Students will leave this workshop not only feeling educated but truly inspired! Visit Ellen's website: www.ellenrolli.com

“Abstract to Representational”
This workshop will explore a unique, abstract and fun approach to creating light patterns.  Through negative space painting, students will go deeper into the space of the paper, claiming and organizing light / shape relationships.  Abstract shape will be taken into a multi-level representational painting.  With this new awareness, students will create a realistic painting using photos or outdoor inspiration to organize, edit and strengthen value relationships to create stronger paintings.

Workshop
John S. Caggiano - Sept 23 – 25

"Painting with the Heart and the Head"

The workshop is geared to all levels of artistic ability. It will concentrate on drawing, composition, design, color and value. John will try to grow the inner talent of the students based upon where they are in their artistic development. The day will begin on location with a painting demonstration emphasizing the essential elements of composing a successful painting en plein air. Students will then work on their own paintings. John will help each student successfully meet the challenge of interpreting the chosen subject matter. To emphasize a painting principle, mini demonstrations may occur. Otherwise, as much painting time as possible will be encouraged.

Workshop
Charles Shurcliff - Sept 30 –Oct 1

“Loosely, Quickly, Surely”

How to understand and see the key elements of any scene – not the boats, trees, houses – but the values that are the building blocks and that, in the end, are the key to paintings that are not just pictorial but convey the sense of light, aliveness and feeling.

Workshop
JC Airoldi -  Sept 30 –Oct 2

“Capturing the Essence En Plein Air”
Pastel & Oil

With JC Airoldi as your guide, learn to put light and life into your paintings as you strive to capture the essence of autumn on Cape Ann. JC will help you learn how to choose the subject or scene you will paint and how to simplify what you see into a dynamic, well-balanced composition. You will learn to interpret the landscape by editing out extraneous elements from the scene and emphasizing others in order to convey your vision, while enjoying the spontaneity of plein air painting. The basics of drawing, value, design and color by learning to see in terms of mass and form rather than detail and line will be emphasized. The benefits of painting outdoors (and indoors) will be discussed, as well as how to design and build a painting that carries intentional impact. This workshop will be fun, yet challenging - the best way to learn!
